16.05.2015 Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents an exhibition of the young Moscow artist Timothy Parshchikov "Figures of intuition." Along with the iconic photo projects of Parshchikov – "Suspense", "Magnitogorsk", "Moscow negatives", "Hot news" "Impossible Puzzle" and "Icelandic runes" – at the exhibition will be presented his video works and installations.
For visitors the exhibition will be open from 16.05.2015 – 21.06.2015 .
Parschikov Timothy (b. 1983) lives and works in Moscow and Paris, but most of his photographic series created during long journeys to the Russian province and the different countries – Italy, China, Iceland. The main subject of attention of Parshchikov – is the ratio of time and space: in solitary figures of self-absorbed people, urban and rural landscapes, splashes of color between light and deep shadow he knows how to discern and express the closeness of changes in politics or culture.
A series "Magnitogorsk. From Stalin to Putin ", in style is close to photo essay, brings the viewer into an industrial city, long considered the world's largest steel-making center, and is now experiencing a deep crisis. The artist as anthropologist creates a portrait of the city, analyzing the two epochs: the creation of the city in the 30s and its present condition.
Another, more narrative approach is presented in the series "Suspense." "Suspense" – is the fear, the terror of the unknown, a feeling that all of us experience when we do not know what will happen the next moment. Photos of the project, being not staged, look like stopped shots from films noir.
In the "Hot News" artist works more in the space of metaphors. The series consists of photos of people standing in the midst of a snow-covered field with burning newspapers in their hands – the flames flared up both literally and figuratively. The flow of information seemed important to the day of release, turns out totally unnecessary for some time later.
A series "Moscow negatives" is devoted to Russian capital. Insulating neon advertising, in paradoxical way, we find ourselves in a very detached and secluded space in which, instead of pulsing of metropolis, are experiencing rather loneliness.
In the "Impossible puzzle," the artist explores the relationship between form and content in the language. Abstract landscapes composed of geometric shapes appear as letters of the new alphabet or phrases whose meaning is not yet available to us.
Language and cryptography inspired a series "Icelandic runes" in which the artist complements cold and mysterious Icelandic landscapes by characters of the runic alphabet.
Neon installation "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Uparsin" transliterates mysterious inscription appearing in painting of Rembrandt "Feast of Belshazzar." According to biblical legend, the words inscribed on the wall by a mysterious hand during the feast of the Babylonian king Belshazzar shortly before the fall of Babylon. Parschikov pulls out the prophetic words from the context, turning them into glowing neon advertising.
