FotoLoft gallery presents a solo exhibition of an Icelandic photographer Sigurjón Pétursson who is inspired by Gunnar Gunnarsson’s novel Advent (The Good Shepherd). The novel is based on a real story of Benedikt’s dangerous journey made early in the last century. In the winter of 2010-2011 Sigurjón made a few journeys to the Highlands, where the scene of the book is laid, to depict the atmosphere of the frozen landscape of northeastern Iceland. Anyone, who has been there once, will tell you about that unusual influence of the Icelandic landscape described in the novel. It is often compared with the moon landscape. It really makes you – whether you want it or not – stop and think about what’s write or wrong in your life, look deep inside your heart and keep your head up in tough times. Sigurjón had selected the most significant parts of the novel and made hundreds of black-and-white pictures of frozen landscapes before he managed to express with his photos the author’s text. Thus, every photo is accompanied with a phrase or passage from the book. However it’s not Sigurjón’s purpose to represent the contents of the novel with photographs. People themselves must associate the novel with the photographs and “fill the gaps”.

Recently, the genre of performance that has gained popularity in the 60's and 70's of the last century, has become an integral part of modern art. Today, a new generation of artists are discovering the performance as an art form that exists only in the making, and the preferred genre, aimed at creating the target object.

Special Project 5th Moscow Biennale "ZERO – PERFORMANCE. The Discreet Charm of the crisis "is devoted to this phenomenon. Particular focus is on the duality of the word "performance" – a term used in English and in the arts (performance – submission) and the economy (performance – activity, performance).

Despite the fact that for many years the persistent belief in the continued growth and the productive power of the economy has been the main paradigm of the current economic crisis has demonstrated the inadequacy of the neo-liberal system and spawned – or even creates – the moment of "zero performance" or "zero performance" across Europe . In addition, this phenomenon has for many existential effects, it also pushes out of the search logic capitalist efficiency and pressure continuous production. Time was the most precious these days. Moments of inaction or delay are not only rare, but recognized as impermissible for working life. The exhibition "ZERO – PERFORMANCE. Discreet Charm of the crisis, "explores the creative potential of this unproductive moments – or" zero "performance, tying him with one hand, to the current economic crisis, and on the other – to the" Praise of laziness "Mladen Stilinovicha, the manifesto written by the artist in 1993 with the aim understand the issues of performance art and the differences in the approaches of artists of the East and the West.

The exhibition brings historical experience of Western and Eastern Europe, the U.S. and Russia to engage in dialogue with the new generation of artists from around the world. Many of the exhibitors present their work in Russia for the first time and especially for the occasion create new works.

POP/OFF/ART GALERY PRESENTS “FURIOUS LIKE A CHILD”

THE PROJECT OF MARGO OVCHARENKO

Margo Ovcharenko is a graduate of the Rodchenko Art School. She had developed her own style long before she entered the Rodchenko Art School one of the most influential art schools of Russia. By the age of 24 she had achieved international success and recognition of peers. Margo deals with problems concerning the role of gender in the contemporary Russian society. In her works she tries to find standards of what is beautiful and what is intimate determining that thin line between being a teenager and a mature person. She focuses on the clumsiness, fragility and vulnerability of young creatures that go through a great deal of breakdowns, shame and secret despair as they grow up. Very often Margo’s models are people she has met by chance in the internet, which makes things more intense and challenging for her while making nude pictures of people she’s never seen before.

Furious like a Child is a personal journey to the world of childhood anxieties, traumas and fears. By recapturing the experience of childhood fears she brings out the material for exploring the place of a woman in the contemporary society. Margo is trying to find those connections and mechanisms of bringing up a child that cause the same behavioral model of feeling ashamed and humiliated. Here as well as in Margo’s photographs behind the mask of beauty and harmony there is a whole universe of psychological conflicts and experiences.

Margo Ovcharenko was born in Krasnodar in 1989. In 2011 she graduated from the Rodchenko Art School. She is a scholarship student of Garage Center for Contemporary Culture. Margo’s solo exhibitions were held in Foto Departament Center in Saint Petersburg, in the gallery Russian Tea Room in Paris, at the Multimedia Art Museum Moscow (as part of the 7th Moscow International Festival ‘Fashion and Style in Photography’ 2011), in the Copenhagen Center of Photography at the Center of Artistic Industries ‘Fabrika’ (as part of the 8th International Month of Photography in Moscow: Photo Biennale 2010). She participated in group exhibitions in Luxembourg, Paris, Düsseldorf, Milan, Houston, New York, Washington, Toronto, Miami, Cape Town, as well as in Slovakia, Lithuania, Finland, Switzerland, China, Hungary. Her works are in collections of Moscow House of Photography and Musée d'Elize in Lausanne, Switzerland.
