The Institute was founded in October, 1959. For more than half a century, researchers at the Institute are engaged in the study of the historical, socio – political, economic, ethnic and cultural problems of several dozen of independent states that emerged on the African continent as a result of the collapse of the colonial system. During this period, had established a solid scientific base of the Soviet – African, and later Russia – Africa relations. Researchers, in different years worked at the Institute, made a significant contribution to the development of the domestic African studies, the names of many of them are well known in the world centers for the study of Africa.
The first director of the Institute became its founder Ivan Potekhin. Later, Institute has been headed by Member of the Academy of Sciences V. Solodovnikov and An. Gromyko. Since 1992, the Institute is headed by Academician A. Vasiliev. The scientific activity of the Institute carried out in accordance with the priority directions of fundamental research, established by the Presidium and of the Charter of the Institute. The Institute is the basic organization of the activities of the Scientific Council for Africa to the Office of Global Issues and International Relations. In the Institute works 102 research workers, including 1 academician, 19 doctors, 53 candidates of sciences.
As part of the Institute are 10 scientific – research centers, as well as the Centre of Scientific Information and International Relations, Department of Postgraduate, editorial – publishing department. Library of the Institute – is a unique collection of scientific and reference literature on Africa, the largest in the Russian Federation and CIS countries. Its funds count about 120 thousand units. These are books, pamphlets, dissertations, periodicals in Russian and foreign languages on the problems of Africa, and the Arab world. The building, which houses the Institute, has considerable historical – cultural significance and interesting history.
