A small mansion of 1820-ies in Sivtsev Vrazhek, it was bought by father of Herzen I. A. – Yakovlev in General Tuchkov in 1839, it is so – called “Tuchkovskuy house “was the place where Alexander Ivanovich Herzen has lived with his family the last years before the emigration. Today the building is in the style of “Empire” with a mezzanine with three windows – the only one in the area of the house, which gives an idea about the building on Arbat in posleapostolskoe time. In Soviet times, it has survived only due to the fact that it lived A. I. Herzen. And in 1976 in the mansion is the only Russian Herzen Museum, gradually, year after year, concentrating in its walls, the great heritage of Herzen. The Herzen Museum is a Museum of the emigrant writer, which is a big part of his life was lived in Russia. So it was difficult to collect his archives, so every thing that was included in the Museum from abroad – a priceless relic. Natalya Petrovna Herzen, Leonard Rist from France and Swiss citizen Serge Herzen. Their gifts to the Museum was the most valuable part of his funds.
The interior of the Museum with precision recreates the atmosphere of the office and the living room of the house Herzen, giving to understand, what at that time was a noble way of life, as relations between people, what thoughts were visited by the inhabitants of this house. Here you can see the unique portraits of the Herzen, his parents, wife and children, rare books autographed by the writer of the manuscript and the types of sites associated with the Institute in Russia and abroad.
Despite the fact that the house keeps such a warm family atmosphere, it is willing to receive guests. As in the olden times, when the house Herzen was about the most interesting people of his time, the Museum often hosts literary and poetry.
