The multifunctional public and the educational platform where different formats are discussed relevant cultural, social and community issues, that remain outside the mainstream information.

The permanent museum exposition devoted to the history of freedom and unfreedom in the USSR (the mythology and ideology, the GULAG and political repression, the dissident movement and dissent), and the identity and fate of academician Sakharov.

The museum and public centre was named after Andrei Sakharov,and it was established in 1996. The main directions of research, public and exhibition activities are "Totalitarian past", "The Life and work of Andrei Sakharov", "Modern problems of Russia". The mission of the museum and public centre is to promote the preservation of the historical memory of millions of victims of political repressions and crimes of the Soviet regime and promoting in modern Russia the values of an opened democratic society and state, which defended and shared Andrei Sakharov. The founder of the museum and public centre is the Andrei Sakharov Foundation. The Chairman of The Fund is Sergey Kovalev. Chairman Of The Board Of The Museum is Anatoly Shabad. The museum and centre is a non – profit cultural institution that exists only on sponsorship funds – grants and charitable donations. The permanent exhibition presents the history of the USSR through the prism of political repression and resistance from the society of the Soviet regime. In Moscow this is the first opening to the public exhibition, dedicated to the memory of millions of people sacrificed in the Communist utopia. The artistic design of the exhibition architect Eugene ACC. In 1997, the project implemented the museum received an award for best interior at the Moscow architecture competition held in the framework of the exhibition Architecture and design. In 1998 – 2003, the materials of the exposition was renewed, by keeping it up.
