The life and art of Alexander Tikhomirov entirely those of the Soviet era. In the 1970-ies, Alexander Tikhomirov has became one of the leaders of the numerous army of the Soviet artists, which is government created, and then replicated reference samples of mass propaganda. Like as many other representatives of the artistic intelligentsia of that time, he was leading a double life, paying a significant portion of their talent creative experimentation in the privacy of the Studio, far from the dictates and ideological order.
The historical context of the epoch is determined not only the life of Alexander Tikhomirov, but the fate of his works. The official party of professional activity of the artist over several decades was limited to work in the Mill design and decoration of the Moscow branch of the Art Fund of the RSFSR. The rest of the time Tikhomirov, working in his workshop, immersed in a world of pure painting, full of incredible phantasmagoria and symbols. This dualism characterizes many masters of the Soviet period, however, case Design is different in that it with one hand out of art groups of unofficial Soviet art (although in some periods of creativity was very close to him), and his works are consistently imbibed a taste for samples of European modernism's most radical clerics. He was inspired by the paintings of Western artists of the XX century – Matisse and Picasso, and at the same time, the art of the late Renaissance.
The dialogue between the two sides of the creative artist's life formed the basis of the exhibition. The first side is represented by sketches for the famous "Leniniana", archival documents and photographs; second, large-scale paintings "from the workshop" Tikhomirova. The viewer can see the artist's totalitarian time in the context of forced and painful compromise between the official language of state propaganda and intensive creative searches of a true artist-experimenter.
The exhibition catalog is planned to release in Russian and English languages.
