The Museum is located in the Northern wing of the ensemble of the former Mariinsky hospital for the poor,it was built in 1806 by I. Gilardi and A. Mikhaylov in the style of late Russian classicism project G. Quarenghi and it is a monument of culture. The hospital wing was designed for various services and state apartments of employees of the hospital. Family doctor M. A. Dostoevsky, father of the writer, took on the first floor of a small apartment of two rooms, and later expanded F. M. Dostoevsky, who was born in the opposite wing, lived in this apartment from 1823 to 1837. He went to Petersburg when he was 16 years old.
Past years here – the formative years of his personality, the accumulation of spiritual experience. They brought him to a Mature understanding of his human, and then the writer's vocation – solving "the mystery man". Spiritual ties with Moscow were reflected in his philosophy of creativity. Moscow realities and prototypes are recognizable in his works.
The apartment of the writer's childhood in bozhedomka street has never been rebuilt. The Museum was opened in 1928 on the basis of the collection A.G. Dostoevskaya. And in 1940 became part of the State Literary Museum. The first exposure was wearing historical and literary character.
After restoration 1979 – 1982 year ,it was restored memorial atmosphere, which was a place of childhood and adolescence of Dostoevsky. The apartment was restored on the basis of the memoirs of the writer's brother, A. M. Dostoevsky. In the exposition of the memorial partially used furniture and other rarities – portraits of the parents, the immediate ancestors and relatives F. M. Dostoevsky, bronze chandeliers (from the collection of A. M. Dostoevsky), first in the life of Dostoevsky's book "one Hundred and four Izbrannye the history of the Old and New Testament" and much more. The composition of the memorial exhibition includes a hospital corridor, which exhibits the handle Dostoevsky, symbolizing his future literary destiny. Outside the walls of the memorial Museum was organized lecture and exhibition hall and the exhibition "the World of Dostoevsky", giving an overview of the work of the writer. Here you can see the St. Petersburg Desk Dostoevsky, who wrote a separate Chapter of the novel "the Brothers Karamazov" and "the Diary of a writer".
Moscow Museum has opened in 1928,it was the world's first Museum of Dostoevsky.
