Today Muzeon Park of Arts is one of the biggest outdoor museums of sculptures in Russia. It has a unique collection of monuments of the Soviet era. They came here in 1992, when the museum was founded. The exhibits of the museum belong to the monumental sculpture of the 1930’s – 1950’s, which was not only used as a means of propaganda, but also served as an element of urban architecture. For example, the monument of Dzerzhinskiy by Yevgeniy Мгсруешср and of Gorky designed by Ilya Shadr and made by Vera Mukhina had been sculptural dominants of two squares in the center of Moscow for many years.
The collection of Muzeon also includes interesting monuments of the era of sotsrealizm, i.e. various busts of heroes of socialist labor, traditional portraits of soviet leaders which were obligatory in every Soviet institution. One of the purposes of the museum was to save these unique monuments. The public’s attitude towards these monuments has been changing with the time and political environment. Apart form artistic value, which may be controversial, all sculptures are also of historical value, because they are artifacts of their time and thus require study. That’s why one of the purposes of the museum is to keep these monuments and provide a scientific description.
Besides ‘program’ monuments of the Soviet era Muzeon also has sculptures of those avant – garde artists who couldn’t exhibit their works back then by ideological reasons and kept them in their workshops away from the general public for a long time. Among them are works of Chubarov, Alexei Grigoriev and Leonid Rabins.
Muzeon of today is a museum and a workshop all in one. Here in 2000’s during sculptural symposiums park sculptures were carved out of limestone. All the symposiums had different subject matters and participants ranging from celebrities such as Farhad Rzaev, Gregory Krasnoshlykov and Vladimir Buinachev to amateurs and students.
Nowadays Muzeon exhibits a lot of works of contemporary sculptures replenishing its collections with plein – air paintings and materials from theme photo exhibitions, modern art – objects and video art materials.
Muzeon provide a place for a dialog of all kinds of contemporary and modern art paying special attention to young painters, sculptors and architects and keeping carefully the legacy and traditions of celebrated masters
