State Museum of the history of the Gulag was founded in 2001. The exhibition was opened in 2004. The founder of the Museum is ALEXANDER Antonov – Ovseenko, he is the famous historian, publicist, public figure, at one time he has passed through Stalin's camps.
The Museum collection includes archive documents, letters, recollections of former prisoners of Gulag; a collection of personal items belonging to them and related to the history of imprisonment, collection of works of art created by artists who has been the GULAG, and modern authors, connected with their understanding of this topic.
The Museum exposition devoted to the history of origin, development and decline of the system of forced labor camps, the most important component of the state machine in 1930 – 50 – ies; its political – administrative and economic role. In the halls of the Museum also presents the fates of different people who is victims of repressive policies and found themselves in prison. An important part of the exposition is the reconstruction of some parts of the camp of everyday life: a fragment of Barack prisoners; the disciplinary cells; derrick time (in the courtyard). In the Museum excursions are held in Russian languageing.
The Museum organizes stationary and mobile exhibitions on the basis of the holdings and, in collaboration with other museums, archives, collectors, artists and photographers. Regularly, the museum holds sessions, meetings and presentations, dedicated to new research the history of the Gulag and the problems associated with its interpretation. In the halls and in the courtyard of the Museum is a venue for plays, concerts, creative evenings and performance shares.
