11 September 2014 - 28 September 2014
Moscow Photographic Salon is an annual fair to bring together all the participants of photography market: galleries, foundations, private collections. At present, it is the only event in Russia which has worked out its specific commercial offer in the sphere of photography.
Galleries. Foundations. Collections: 12/09 – 16/09
Independent authors: 20/09 – 28/09
The Salon will be held in two stages over the period from September 12 to September 28, 2014 in the Gallery of Classical Photography, the total area of which is over 1,000 square meters. In the first part which will be held from September 12 to September 16 there will be demonstrated collections of Russian and foreign galleries, foundations and photography collectors. During the second part of the Salon, which will fall at September 20-28 one will have a chance to contemplate the works by contemporary Russian authors from different corners of our country.
The event is deemed to be a miniature counterpart of global photographic fairs and aims at creation of the Russian photography market along with its integration into the global market. It also pursues the objective of working out uniform terms, certification, distribution and photography works performance standards.
Over thirty European galleries and collectors were attracted to participate in the first part of the Salon. It was caused by substantial interest in the event on the part of foreign participants of photography market. Works by Russian authors will be represented by a number of native dealers and collectors, and will take approximately one third of the Salon’s exhibition space. The number of participants is limited by the total Salon area and organizers’ desire to boost the level of the exhibited works of art and, consequently, to tighten the selection criteria. As Mark Cobert, MPS art director points out: “A number of well-grounded remarks regarding previous Salons made us reconsider the event concept and considerably tighten the requirements to participants. These measures had a favorable effect on artistic constituent of the demonstrated photographs and in the long run we managed to collect under the same roof really outstanding works which are of interest for a wide audience as well as for connoisseurs of art”.
Apart from that, there was considerably enlarged the display area for special projects of the Salon representing a wide range of outlooks on photographic art of the 20th century. The main project of MPS 2014 – “Subjective color” – was presented by the curator and collector of photographs Artyom Loginov and reflects the establishment of color photography as a visual language.
No doubt, the first exposition of the National Photography Museum in France will appeal to a wide audience – a photography collection of the stardom in the world of photography, which includes works by August Sander, William Klein, Walker Evans, Berenice Abbott, Elliott Erwitt, Louis Ferreira, Mary Ellen Mark, Pierre Beranger, Frantisek Drtikol, etc. The large size of proof (up to 120х180cm) made the year 1984 a turning point when European museums started perceiving photography as an art-object.
A series of special projects is crowned with the exhibition of Paul Strand’s proofs with photographs dating back to the 1930s from legendary “Mexican portfolio”.
Being the fourth in succession, the Salon has a number of fundamental distinctive features that helps it stand out against the previous events. First of all, the fair will serve as a springboard for a number of photo-publications, exhibitions and auctions in 2014-2015.
For the duration of the Salon, the whole space of the ground floor will be at the disposal of collectors for the purpose of free demonstration of photographic collections and communication.
Without being opposed to well-established photographic institutions in Moscow, the Salon offers an alternative take on photography and its history. The Salon doesn’t pursue the aim of taking the lead in popularity and attendance ratings. Just the other way round, it is quite a chamber event for art lovers with a museum level of the presented projects and club atmosphere.
