The Center for Creative Industries “Fabrika” presents Alice Kern’s solo show titled “Normalization Operations”, which will take place at the Arthaus space from the 1st to 18th March 2018.
The project “Normalization operations” is a result of a two-year study on the phenomena of “normalization”. This term denotes devices and processes responsible for maintaining order in chaotic systems and resistance to entropy. Such devices and processes exist in any system, but usually remain invisible to its users (or participants). Like any tool, the normalizing mechanism (or process) comes out when special attention is directed to it – which usually happens when breaks down.
Viewers will gain access to a closed area of a surgical block where normalization operations are carried out. The operational zone is characterized by its own artificial environment. For its’ proper functioning, air temperature is monitored, an elevated pressure level is maintained, and a special ventilation system operates to prevent the operating site from hitting enthetic bodies by air. The architecture of the surgical block corresponds to the needs of the entire system’s effective operation. A viewer will get acquainted with all stages of the system’s functioning, and will also be able to experience some of the effects of the operating room running, for example, a sudden immersion into anesthetic sleep.
